Why it matters. In California it is a misdemeanor to knowingly engage an unlicensed security guard company (Bus. & Prof. Code 7582.3), and licensed guard companies must carry $1,000,000 in liability insurance. Illinois requires an agency license for every guard and alarm company and every branch office (225 ILCS 447/10-5).

Common questions

Does a security guard company need a license?

Yes. In California a company that furnishes guards must hold a private patrol operator license from BSIS (Bus. & Prof. Code 7582.3). In Illinois it needs a private security contractor agency license from IDFPR, plus a branch office license for each additional location (225 ILCS 447/10-5).

Are security companies required to carry insurance?

California private patrol operators must keep at least $1,000,000 of commercial general liability insurance on file with BSIS (Bus. & Prof. Code 7583.39–7583.40). Illinois security and alarm contractors must carry general liability insurance and prove it to IDFPR (225 ILCS 447/20-10, 25-10). Ask for a certificate.

What must a California alarm contract include?

It must be in writing and show the company's license number, the selling agent's registration number, the work, price and system description, monitoring services and a BSIS disclosure; residential auto-renewals need a separate disclosure (Bus. & Prof. Code 7599.54).

Why does an Illinois listing say "discipline on record"?

IDFPR's licensing file records a disciplinary action against that license. We show each entry exactly as IDFPR publishes it. It doesn't mean the license is restricted today; the status shown is today's status.

Why is there no phone number?

Neither state's public file includes phone numbers, and Illinois lists only the city. Use the form on a listing and we pass your message on, or ask the company to claim its listing.

Are private investigators listed?

No. This site covers security guard and alarm companies only.
